I was deeply moved by the power of living by simple rhythms -- the rising and setting of the sun, the moon, the changing tides, the time in community and the time for solitude.
- Trip Participant
Experience the sweetness of summer on a Maine island – that fullness of season that arrives naturally and brings with it a glimpse of the grace of being alive. Two Roads travels in tandem and solo kayaks along scenic coastlines to lovely island campsites. Hungry Island on the eastern edge of Muscongus Bay has miles of hiking trails that wind through forests and fern-covered clearings, spilling out on secret coves. Russ Island in Penobscot Bay is ringed with sensuously sculpted granite and capped with an open meadow overlooking the bay. For each trip, the group first gathers at the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset and then travels together to a point of departure further up the coast. The paddling distance to each island is less than two miles across protected bays, but the deeper journey is to a new land, to the unknown place, where the solitude of the sea invites exploration and personal reflection. This edge of the Atlantic is rich and raw, a compelling setting in which to practice contemplation and council, as we each seek to come into an understanding of the nature of healing.
