Two Roads Maine has three core staff members; several additional guides and interns rotate through our trips over the course of a year. On all wilderness trips the staff includes a Wilderness First Responder and Registered Maine Guide. We have invited the core staff members to introduce themselves in their own words.

Stephen Hyde

"For the past 30 years I have lived on and worked with a particular piece of the earth, have raised a family, raised food, raised stones, studied, taught and written about nature, ecology, and spirit. At the same time that I have cultivated a deep and enduring sense of home, I have ventured into wilderness whenever the opportunity presented itself, exploring forest, river, desert, and range. Through the Two Roads Maine program, I continue to explore the place and importance of wilderness in my world, taking those who have become lost or disoriented into wild, uncultivated places where they may find, or identify again for themselves, their own home. With neighbors, friends, and family I practice meditation as a similar means of re-orienting one’s life, of coming home through one’s essential homelessness. I have been so fortunate for the past few decades to accompany so many wonderful beings, human and otherwise, on the long and unexpected road of pilgrimage."

Kirstin Edelglass

"The woods and waters of Maine have always been a refuge and source of wonder for me. In times of loss and disorientation, my renewal has come from beds of moss and sunrise skies as well as close friendships. Two Roads offers a space where my inner life and professional experience are called upon as an integrated whole. For the last fifteen years I have guided wilderness journeys for high school and college students in Alaska, California, Vermont, and Maine. My graduate studies in holistic education inspired me to design and lead the Canoe Expedition for Maine Girls (a special program of the Chewonki Foundation) as well as several experiential courses for college students (at Colby College and Lesley University). My life is also enriched by my work as a hospice volunteer, by my music and creative pursuits, and by my family and community."

David Hyde

"My love affair with the natural world started at an early age, running through the woods, playing in ponds, climbing rocks and trees through all of the seasons. The beauty, serenity and wonder that were regularly offered were then and still are powerful forces in my life. The inspiration for Two Roads Maine came after two major events in my life: a cancer diagnosis followed two days later by a job elimination. I spent time on the water, in the woods and in dialogue with friends and family as part of my healing. With insights gleaned from my own experience of healing and re-ordering my life, I have supported hundreds of people through life-changing journeys in nature.
As the Executive Director of Two Roads, I have the opportunity to interact with a wide array of people, all over Maine and beyond, who share my belief in the healing power of nature. What is offered through the conversations in community, the time on a shore line watching a sunset or paddling across a pond is important to the psyche and the soul. The challenge to explore one’s inner landscape while venturing to an island or an upcountry pond can only be met and supported by friends who have taken the road less traveled. "
